This Summer we took a visit to Ullswater, in the Lake District for 2 nights. Here’s some of my recommendations of places to visit.

Ullswater is actually my favourite lake in the Lake District. We stayed in the buzzing village of Pooley Bridge. In this village you have lots of choice of pubs/restaurants and some of them back onto River Eamont which flows into Ullswater. We stayed at Pooley Bridge Inn, which had a lovely family room and was also dog friendly. We ate at Pooley Bridge Inn on the first night which has a farmhouse country feel and the second night we ate at The Crown which backed onto the river. I actually enjoyed the food more at The Crown.

Canoening on the Lake

We booked a double canoe session for my hubby and girls. They were so lucky with the weather that day, the instructor even commented on how calm the water was. The girls throughly enjoyed going out on the water. Once they had finished we had a walk round the grounds at the beautiful hotel “Another Place’. This hotel sits right on the Lake so you wake up to beautiful views every day.

Aira Force Waterfall

We then went on to find the waterfall at Aira Force which is just further up the lake. This is a beautiful waterfall hidden in the woodlands. I loved hearing the water even before we got near it. Its very pretty and is owned by National Trust too.

Ullswater Streamers

Whilst we didn’t go on the Ullswater Streamers, we did see them going past a couple of times while we were on the Lake. Its stretches 20 miles and takes dogs too. Unfortunealty they were fully booked on the day we were there, so would book ahead next time.

Finding a spot to watch the sunset

Myself and my girls all love to find the sunsets so we walked down the Lake edge at Pooley Bridge. If you walk out of the village towards the Lake there’s a boat hire, we just pitched up a bit further along on the waters edge. The girls enjoyed paddling in the water while we watched the sun setting.

We had a lovely time at Ullswater and will definitely be returning soon.

Top Tips

  • There’s plenty of parking at Pooley Bridge
  • Try to visit Aira Force Waterfalls on quieter times. The busiest time is 11 – 3pm. On the first time we got to the car park at 11:30 we waited 15 mins trying to park before giving up and coming back later on.
  • If you want to go on the Ullswater Streamer then I advise you book ahead online.
  • If you want to go Paddle Boarding or Canoeing book ahead with https://www.ullswaterpaddleboarding.co.uk/
